Type 2 diabetes awareness campaign update

Last September we ran the UK’s biggest ever Type 2 diabetes awareness campaign.  For two weeks we urged the UK public to Check Your Risk. Read about the outcomes of the campaign here.

We’re really proud that Diabetes UK and our volunteers have played a part in raising awareness, and in driving action to address the Type 2 diabetes epidemic. Almost 30,000 people took our online risk assessment during the two week campaign. Hundreds of thousands more people are now aware of the condition, its seriousness, and of Diabetes UK. For us, this is a fantastic result.

We’ve now completed a full campaign evaluation and we’re excited to share the results with you. We’ve consulted with the general public, healthcare professionals, politicians and of course people at risk of Type 2 diabetes; to give you an idea of our findings:

People were diagnosed as a direct result of the campaign

Our research suggests that as many as six per cent of people who took the online survey went on to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. That’s testament to a close targeting of the at-risk community.

Professionals in primary care – an audience with which we sometimes struggle to engage – were twice as likely to recall the campaign as the general public.Spontaneous awareness of Diabetes UK leaped from seven per cent to 12 per cent in the period just after the campaign – a huge result. All that remains is to say a very big thank you to everyone who played a part in the campaign. It was a real team effort, with work from Regional and National teams in preparing the ground before launch, the fantastic support from the Media, Digital and Clinical teams, and support from our thousands of volunteers who helped make this campaign a success. Well done all.
