- August 2012 – August 2013
Background to project
The drinking culture in the UK particularly affects young adults. Knowledge of the alcoholic content of drinks among the general public is poor and alcohol misuse accounts for 20,000 premature deaths every year. Young adults with Type 1 diabetes are particularly at risk because they can struggle to balance self-management of their condition with everyday social activities (including the consumption of alcohol) or underestimate the impact of alcohol on glucose control.
Project aims
Dr Katherine Barnard and her team at the University of Southampton will conduct a survey to assess alcohol consumption, knowledge of the effects of alcohol and diabetes management strategies among people aged 18-30 with Type 1.
Potential benefit to people with diabetes
This study will provide essential information on drinking patterns, diabetes management and knowledge accuracy among young adults with Type 1. It will form the basis of future research to explore understanding and experiences and will ultimately inform clinical guidelines to minimise the risks associated with alcohol use and promote better self-management of diabetes.
