AHP, nurse and midwife Research Training Fellowship

Description of the Allied health professional, nurse and midwife Research Training Fellowship

These fellowships are open to allied health professionals, nurses and midwives who are committed to the care of people with diabetes and their carers and who wish to undertake training in clinical or basic science research at a UK Higher Education institution leading to a PhD.

Financial support

Support may be requested for up to three years full time. However, the fellowship may be held on a part time basis over a longer period.

Salaries

Salary for the applicant may be requested commensurate with the candidate’s salary at the time of appointment.
Fees for the PhD will be provided at a UK Higher Education rate.

Materials and consumables

Requests should not exceed £14,000 per annum and should include any costs for equipment and costs associated with animal research where relevant.

Training

Up to £1,500 may be requested for relevant training. This should be justified within the application and all training needs to be approved by Diabetes UK before it is undertaken.

Eligibility

Applicants must be, or are eligible to be, registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC), Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or other appropriate regulatory body.

Candidates of any nationality may apply but must have been resident and working in the EEA (European Economic Area) for three years immediately before application and intend to pursue an allied health professions, nursing or midwifery related career in the United Kingdom.

All applicants must have identified a sponsor before applying. Diabetes UK can not identify sponsors for potential applicants and will not accept applications from applicants without a potential sponsor.

We would normally expect candidates to hold a degree (classification minimum 2:1) or equivalent. However applicants who are unsure of their eligibility should contact the Diabetes UK Research department in the first instance: research@diabetes.org.uk.

Deadlines

The Allied health professional, nurse and midwife Fellowship is advertised in the scientific/medical press in March each year, with a submission deadline of 10 September 2010.

How to apply

Application forms must be requested from the Research Department. At this stage applicants are asked to provide a CV with a full publication list, if applicable, and brief details of an agreed supervisor and of their proposed research question. Applications must be from both the agreed supervisor and the candidate. Supervisors must be able to show that they have a full time position at a UK-based institution for the lifetime of the grant. Diabetes UK will not accept applications from the candidate on their own.

Administrative processes

Selection Panel

Applications are sent to a remote Panel. Allied health professional, nurse and midwife Research Training Fellowship applications will not be externally peer reviewed. The remote Panel will peer-review applications and make recommendations for funding.

Decisions are usually made by January the next year. Applicants will be notified as to the success of their application via email and letter.

Applications are assessed on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the proposal and its relevance to people with diabetes.
  • Track record of proposed supervisor and candidate where applicable.
  • Quality of research environment and support.
  • Suitability of project for PhD training.
