Financial support
Support is normally requested for initial purchase/upgrade of the equipment and for up to three years of equipment support costs; however, longer periods of time may be requested if scientifically justified.
The maximum amount that may normally be requested is £100,000. Applications for less than £20,000 will not normally be considered under this scheme. Small items of equipment under £20,000 can be requested as part of a project grant application.
Diabetes UK expects that applications will normally include a contribution from the host institution or other source. As a guide, we would expect a minimum contribution in the region of 20 per cent of the total cost of the equipment. This contribution may be towards the purchase of the equipment or the running costs.
Diabetes UK will not pay for indirect costs, overhead costs or institute costs associated with the equipment.
Eligibility
Applicants should be in receipt of substantial grant funding either from Diabetes UK or other funding bodies.
Deadline
The next deadline for this scheme is:
- 2 December 2013 (Committee meets in May 2014).
How to apply
Applicants should, in the first instance, submit a single-page summary of the proposed equipment application, a copy of their CV and details of all current funding held prior to submission of a full application.
The Diabetes UK Research department will review this and, if appropriate, will provide a full equipment grant application form for the applicant to complete and submit before the deadline.
Evidence of contribution from the host institution/other source will be requested at the full application stage.
Administrative processes
Peer review
Applications will be sent out for peer review to researchers who have not published or worked in the same institution as any of the applicants for at least five years. Please consider this when suggesting reviewers for your application.
The Research Committee
Applications are sent to the Research Committee, which meets twice a year to recommend which applications should be funded.
Prior to the Research Committee meeting, the Diabetes UK Grants Advisory Panel (GAP) meets to discuss all project grant applications and provide feedback to the Research Committee through the three members of the Research Committee who are also members of GAP. Applicants should take this into consideration especially when they are completing the summary for people living with diabetes. More detail on the Research Committee and GAP can be found in Our funding process.
Assessment criteria
Applications are assessed on the following criteria:
- Potential difference the research will make to the lives of people with diabetes.
- Scientific excellence.
- Track record of the applicants.
- Value for money.
