NIHR Clinical Research Network: Support for studies recruiting participants

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) provides infrastructure that allows high-quality clinical research to take place in the NHS.

In January 2018, the NIHR CRN extended its support into health and social care research taking place in non-NHS settings.

The NIHR CRN:

•    helps researchers to set up clinical studies quickly and effectively
•    supports the life sciences industry to deliver their research programmes
•    provides healthcare professionals with research training
•    works with patients to ensure their needs are at the very centre of all research activity.

When planning your study, we recommend involving your local CRN team in discussions as early as possible, in partnership with your local R&D office. This way, you can fully benefit from the support the NIHR CRN offers.

NIHR CRN Recruitment data collection

If your study involves the NHS or NHS patients, we expect you to apply for NIHR CRN support in England, and/or its equivalents in the Devolved Administrations, where appropriate.

If your study is deemed eligible for consideration for NIHR CRN support, we expect you to:

•    Upload monthly recruitment data to the NIHR CRN Portfolio using the NIHR Central Portfolio Management System (CPMS)
•    Access CPMS support materials. This is a condition for continued support from the CRN and inclusion in the NIHR CRN Portfolio.
•    Keep your study record on the CPMS up to date.

Activity data from the NIHR CRN are used to increase NHS engagement and improve clinical research infrastructure in England.
