About the research
What is the research about?
Knowing the level of glucose in your blood is useful for when you are trying to control your diabetes. It can help to maintain day-to-day control, detect hypoglycaemia, assess control during any illness, and helps to provide information that can be used in the prevention of long term complications. Currently home blood glucose testing gives an accurate picture of your blood glucose level at the time of the test. It involves pricking the side of your finger (as opposed to the pad) with a finger-pricking device and putting a drop of blood on a testing strip. A meter will read the result automatically. This research aims to develop a model of how the characteristics of the eye change when the level of glucose changes in the blood. The longer term goal is to use this information to develop a meter that measures this through a low powered power beam of light into the eye rather than with a finger-picking device.
What will taking part in the research involve for participants?
Participants will be asked to attend two one hour screening visits where the participant’s eyes will be examined by an optometrist to ensure that the participant has no existing eye conditions.
Participants will then be asked attend five testing sessions which will start at approximately 12:30 and last for five hours. During the testing sessions there are two 15 minute breaks for a light meal or snack of choice.
The testing session will involve a small, flexible tube being inserted into the arm to allow for regular blood samples to be taken. During the whole session it is estimated that a total of 30ml of blood will be sampled. In addition eye measurement will be taken from participants at these sessions.
Financial remuneration
Participants will be paid on a pro rate basis of £50/day with an additional £50 for completion of all five testing sessions (total £300) to remunerate for time. Reasonable travel expenses will also be paid.
