Tell us your views on diabetes research

People living with diabetes are diabetes experts in their own right, whether they have the condition themselves or are a parent or carer of someone who does.

Diabetes UK draws on this expertise throughout the research-funding process by considering the experiences of people affected by diabetes, and getting their insights into the day-to-day challenges involved.

Diabetes UK Grants Advisory Panel

One way we do this is through our Grants Advisory Panel (GAP) – 15 people with diabetes, their parents and other people who care for them. We work hard to make sure that people of different ages, backgrounds, ethnic groups and different types of diabetes from across the UK are represented in this group.

Diabetes UK Grants Advisory Panel

The panel comes together before each meeting of the Diabetes UK Research Committee to discuss the grant applications we have received. Members of GAP comment on each application from their own perspective, highlighting issues such as the relevance and value of the work to people living with diabetes.

Three members of the panel then provide feedback at Research Committee meetings, where points raised by GAP are discussed further and taken into consideration.

Overall, this robust process ensures that we spend our funds in the best possible way – on research of the highest scientific quality that has the greatest potential to improve the lives of people with diabetes.
