For healthcare professionals
We know that across England there are a number of problems for people with diabetes in accessing their free NHS annual retinal screening test by digital camera.
We are hoping that this campaign will highlight these problems and cause the NHS to reassess how it implements its screening services to ensure 100 per cent of people with diabetes receive their screening test. This was set out in the National Screening Framework targets for the NHS.
Generally, diabetic retinopathy has no obvious symptoms so many people with diabetes are unaware they have it until it is well advanced, but a retinal eye examination will pick up the earliest sign of retinopathy developing.
Diabetes UK has also produced the following new materials for your patients:
- Your Vision leaflet entitled 'Your Vision is at risk: Information for people with diabetes on diabetic retinopathy' which explains what diabetic retinopathy is, what care to expect and how they can reduce their risk Code 4943
- 'Your Vision' poster for your waiting room Code 4944
- 'Your Vision' eye card simulating the typical effects of retinopathy when held up to your eye Code 5600
Please help the campaign by ordering these materials. Phone our distribution centre on 0800 585088 quoting HCPRW and state the materials you require with their relevant codes. Take a look at other links and downloadable documents that may also be helpful.
