For people with diabetes
Diabetes UK is launching the ‘Your Vision’ campaign to help raise awareness of diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among people of working age. Generally, retinopathy has no obvious symptoms so many people with diabetes may be unaware that they have it until it is well advanced.
People with diabetes should receive both a free general eye examination and a free digital retinopathy screening every year. They are different and it is important that you use both services to pick up any problems at an early stage.
By ensuring you have both tests every year you can reduce your risk and prevent any problems from getting worse.
We know that in some areas around the UK, people with diabetes have experienced difficulties accessing their free annual retinal screening test by digital camera.
Diabetes UK is also campaigning to improve retinal screening services. To make this campaign effective we need as many people with diabetes as possible to get involved.
