Keep children living with diabetes Safe in School
Are you a parent, carer or grandparent of a child with diabetes? Do you live in England? We need your help to keep children Safe in School.
The Health Conditions in School Alliance is taking the Safe in School campaign to Parliament to fight for the rights of children with Type 1 diabetes and other medical conditions. And now you can apply to join us.
You'll have a chance to meet with your MP and join the hand-in of a petition calling for better support for children with medical conditions in school.
How you can help
If your application is successful, we’ll arrange for you to meet with your MP, so you can tell them why good care in school matters for you and your child.
When: 23 October, between 11:30am and 6:00pm, depending on when your MP is free to meet.
Where: At the Houses of Parliament in London
Why are we doing this?
In 2014, Diabetes UK and the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance successfully fought for changes to the law in England that mean all schools need to have policies to support children with Type 1 diabetes and other medical conditions.
But this year our research found only 11.5 per cent of schools could show they have the right support in place for children with medical conditions. This is because schools are not aware of the law, or do not understand what it means for them. Read the full findings of our research (Word, 30KB).
Every child deserves a bright future, but not all are being given the same opportunity. We, and over 45,000 people who signed the petition we'll hand in at Parliament, are fighting for the law to be better communicated and monitored across England.
Is this event for me?
If you are a parent, grandparent or carer of a child with a medical condition who is currently at school in England, you are very welcome to apply to join us.
You don't need to have met or worked with your MP before, as we'll offer you all the support and information you might need.
Before your meeting, you’ll join a briefing in Parliament and will have the opportunity to meet other families taking part.
Help with travel costs
Joining the fight for better diabetes care in school won't leave you out of pocket either. Diabetes UK and other members of the Health Conditions in School Alliance will be able to offer support with travel and accomodation costs if your application to join us is successful.
Any reasonable travel costs for you and one child can be claimed back, and accommodation costs can be covered for anyone living more than four hours away from London by train.
Please do not to contact your MP or book transportation and accommodation before we confirm if we can offer you a place. We will not cover costs for bookings made before we send you an invite.
Full details of the Diabetes UK volunteer expenses policy are available on our website.
Lunch and dietary requirements
Lunch and refreshments will be available on the day. Our caterers should be able to accommodate any dietary requirements, so just let us know what you need in the application form. You’ll be able to let us know what you need in the application form.
The application process
Unfortunately as we’ll have limited budget and space at this event, we will not be able to invite everyone who applies for a place. We’ll make selections based on who has the best chance to convince as many MPs as possible to get behind the campaign.
That means we’ll only be able to offer you a place once we’ve confirmed a meeting with your MP, and will only be inviting one child and parent from each MP’s constituency.
If you'd like a copy of our full selection policy, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The petition hand-in
After parents and children meet with their MPs, we plan to present the petition to government.
You’ll have the option to apply for a place the reception in the application form. If more people apply than for a place than can fit in the room, we’ll choose who to invite by a random lottery.
Other ways to support the campaign
Not a parent of a school age child or can't make it on the day? Don't worry, you can still get behind the Safe in School campaign.
Please do sign and share the petition on Change.org – we want as many people as possible standing up for better diabetes care in school.
For people in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales
The current law on caring for children with medical conditions in school, The Children and Families Act 2014, only applies to schools in England. That means the changes we will be asking for during this event will only apply in England, which is why we are only inviting people with a child at school in England to this event. Read more about the law in the other nations (PDF, 48KB).
If you are in Wales you can help by emailing your five AMs about changes to the law currently being considered by the Welsh Assembly. If you would like to contact us for more details about the situation in Wales, please email email@example.com.
