Proof that silence can speak volumes

Josh's sponsored silence

Josh is 12 years old and his grandfather, 'Gumps', lives with Type 2 diabetes and his cousin Evie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged 10.

The James’ are a fundraising family. Josh’s mum, Hayley, ran the Great North run for us and together they’ve all taken part in the London Bridges Walk. They’re exceptional in their commitment to fighting for a world where diabetes can do no harm.

  • Josh wanted to raise money and awareness of diabetes at school.
  • His cousin was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged ten and his grandad has Type 2.
  • He did a presentation to his class putting us forward as his chosen charity.
  • His tutor group held a sponsored silence to raise money for us.

A brave individual

But Josh wanted to do more. And in 2017 he saw an opportunity to make it happen where he spends a lot of his time, at school. His tutor group at Campion Secondary School in Northampton had decided to fundraise. The floor was opened for students to put forward a charity they’d like to support.

It takes a brave individual to stand up in front of their peers and explain to them why fundraising for a cause close to their heart is important.

Diabetes isn’t an easy subject to explain at any age. It’s a complicated condition that can be really serious. But for Josh, who’s incredibly passionate about Grumps, Evie and their well-being, it was a no-brainer. He was going to present to the whole class.

Which we think is seriously cool.

Josh is dyslexic so preparing his presentation and Powerpoint was a challenge to overcome before reaching the classroom, but his determination never dwindled.

And with his presentation ready, beyond his year’s maturity and exceptional delivery Josh secured us as his tutor's chosen charity. A huge moment for this young hero to take pride in.

Silence for an entire day

The next challenge was one of mammoth proportions. Organising a sponsored silence with his tutor group. The technique used by Josh to maintain silence for an entire day in a room full of 12-year-olds will be studied for many years to come.

Though we’ve been lucky enough to be given the down low by the man himself. They communicated via white board and marker pen, asking and answering questions. A lovely idea.

Collectively Campion Secondary School raised £55, with Josh raising £44. A fantastic achievement. But what inspires us the most about this story is that together this tutor group cut out our most natural instinct, particularly at school, which is to natter, to be a united front for Josh and people in need.

They did it for an entire day for Grumps, Evie and people affected by diabetes. We couldn’t be more grateful to everyone involved. Josh’s fundraising is proof that silence really can speak volumes.
