Volunteering to support everyone who works for and with us

Our behind-the-scene volunteers such as Sally help to tackle the diabetes crisis by supporting our local groups in the South East

What attracted you to start volunteering?

I was looking for a role that would not only stretch me but where I could use my communication skills to help and improve the lives of people, like myself, who have to live with diabetes on a daily basis.

What do you enjoy most about your volunteering role?

I love the whole thing, from promoting meetings, helping groups increase their membership using skills they do not necessarily find easy. Running awareness stands where I can help people who aren't as lucky as I am and do not have the information to hand as I do. Going to meetings where without fail I learn a new fact, Generally getting the word out about diabetes and trying to make a difference.

What difference has volunteering made to you?

I have learnt new skills re social media and used them to increase numbers and generally raise awareness. It has given me confidence to discuss and talk about my diabetes. I have met loads of people all interesting, although personally I have a big social circle I find talking about diabetes within the support group is helpful to both myself and others.

Has volunteering led you onto anything else? If yes, please explain.

I hope that my volunteering will lead to my efforts being increasingly helpful and effective. I would like to join the CPD, and also take on other roles for the charity as a volunteer

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering with us?

I love Diabetes UK I think it is a fantastic charity and a great charity to work for as a volunteer. I would encourage anyone who is living with diabetes to give some time if they can. They will get back so much from the experience and learn so much about diabetes, as well as meeting the most amazing people. To me it is a win win every day.

Any other comments?

I thoroughly enjoy volunteering, I have met some amazing people, listened to some fantastic speakers and learnt so much. I hope I can continue to try as a volunteer to make a difference, all be it small and hopefully though knowledge, support and empathy help people to better deal with diabetes on a daily basis.
