Sarah Gibbs, Local Group member

Sarah had been volunteering with Diabetes UK for three years. When diagnosed with diabetes three years ago, Sarah didn't know where to turn, who to talk to, felt very alone and felt it was the world being diagnosed. She found Diabetes UK who answered nearly all of her questions and helped her understand her condition and that it is possible to live well with diabetes.

What is the best thing about volunteering?

The best thing about volunteering is meeting lots of people who are or were in the same position, and being able to help them, let them know there are people in the same position but that we can support them.

What impact has volunteering had on you and/or your local community?

Volunteering has had a massive impact on my life, it has changed my life, I've gained better understanding of diabetes and through the local group am able to pass this understanding on to others, with that in mind it has had an impact through the city and health board, support from healthcare professionals and GPs etc.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering?

If you are thinking about volunteering - do it. It's so worthwhile, no matter how small or big a contribution you make, do it.
