What's in season: Blueberries

Blissful blueberries

Blueberries have become very popular in the UK over the last few years.

Although they aren't as established as other classic British summer berries, blueberries do very well in our milder climate.

What's more, they're full of helpful nutrients like vitamin A, B and C, as well as fibre and potassium.

This makes them a great way to add sweetness and colour to a variety of dishes.

Buying your blueberries

British blueberries are some of the best available, so go for local varieties where possible. They should be a deep, blue-purple colour and should not have any leakage. Definitely avoid any blueberries with evidence of mould too.

Safe storage

Blueberries should last around 10 days in the fridge. Keep them dry and covered to ensure they stay fresh.

Using berries to their best

Blueberries can be added raw to a wide range of dishes. Put them on cereal for a healthy alternative to sugar, or in fat-free yogurt for an instant dessert.

They can also be used in cooking, in everything from cheesecake and muffins to soufflé and gâteau.
