A healthier Hackney for people with diabetes

A group aimed at connecting people in Hackney who have diabetes has launched with a very successful first meeting.

The group aims to support people with diabetes who live in the borough and will meet at 7pm, in the Community Room at the Hackney Picturehouse on Mare Street on the third Tuesday of each month (the next few meetings are planned for May, July and September).

The group will be led by resident Bindie Wood. She said: “I decided to set up the group because I want a healthier Hackney for people with diabetes and their families. I am pleased to have the support of Ann Chambers, and colleagues, from the Hackney Diabetes Centre at the Homerton Hospital."

“We hope this partnership will encourage more people with diabetes to have the confidence to look after and improve their own health and well-being”.

Corriene Bailey-Bearfield, Senior Volunteer Development Lead for Diabetes UK, said:  “Diabetes can be a difficult condition to manage and people can really learn from each other. Local groups such as the new Hackney group help people find a balance between living their lives and keeping in good health.”

In City and Hackney - the public heath area - there are currently 13,099 people diagnosed with diabetes, 5.67% of the population.
