Media Volunteering

Become a media volunteer

The London region is building up a pool of media volunteers who will be available to speak to their local media when needed about diabetes.

Getting Diabetes UK in the media is a very effective way of raising awareness about diabetes and telling more people about the support Diabetes UK can offer them.

Full briefings will be given before any media work and the London team will support you every step of the way.

You just need to be willing and able to tell your story about living with diabetes – first to our media officer, who will put together a ‘case study’ for you – and then to journalists in the local press and broadcast media.

What are the requirements?

We are looking for people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who live or work in any of the London boroughs. We are also looking for parents who have children with diabetes.

You will need to be willing to be photographed and happy to talk about your personal experiences of living with diabetes, whether you have the condition yourself or are a parent with a child with diabetes.

How often will I be asked to do media work?

This will vary, but it is likely to only happen a few times a year, at most. You will be contacted initially by our media officer, who will talk to you about your story and put together a case study for you, which you will have the opportunity to check and make changes to. You will also be asked to send us a photograph of yourself. Then it is a matter of waiting until a story comes up that the local media is interested in. The media officer will always contact you first before sending out your details to the media and will always brief you before you have any contact with journalists.
