Woman from Leicestershire receives support from famous friend and passes £11k fundraising milestone after marathon effort

Vicky Warden (pictured above with her brother Mitch), who was born and grew up in Great Glen, has passed the £11k milestone in her fundraising efforts for last week’s London Marathon, which she ran for Diabetes UK in a time of 4 hours and 23 minutes.

Vicky, 27, took on the 26.2 mile challenge, to raise awareness after her older brother Mitch, who lived in Great Glen, tragically passed away from a diabetes-related condition last year.

Mitch would have been 32 tomorrow (April 27).

Vicky trained hard for the event and said: “I have another brother and friends who haveType 1 diabetesand for the majority of their lives I have felt like I have not been able to do anything to help them.

"Now, however, I know that every mile that my boyfriend Matt Ford and I ran and every pound we raised will help hopefully prevent someone else having to go through what my family and I are going through."

We owe a big heart felt thank you to everyone who has supported us and donated.

Key to reaching this milestone was the support she received from close friend and Great Britain’s Women’s Hockey Goalkeeper, Maddie Hinch who auctioned off the goalkeeping top she wore during the Rio 2016 Olympic final.

Britain won its first ever hockey gold medal that day and this might explain the interest in the item, which eventually sold for a whopping £5000.

Explaining why she chose to give up her own piece of hockey history, Maddie said: "Diabetes has dramatically changed the lives of people extremely close to me, so it was an easy decision to give up my goalkeeping smock and shorts worn during Rio 2016 to help Vicky in her fundraising for Diabetes UK.

"I was truly shocked by how much it went for, but I couldn’t be happier that the highest bidder now has their own bit of Olympic history in aid of an amazing cause.”
