Community Champions - North of England

Diabetes Community Champions help educate and raise awareness of diabetes and Diabetes UK to people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities. Champions will have been trained to understand key messages. Along with their cultural values and a passion for community based health promotion, awareness is raised within key communities.

In white people, Type 2 diabetes usually occurs over the age of 40, but people with Black African, African Caribbean and South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi) backgrounds are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes from a younger age. Getting treatment early can reduce the risk of developing complications such as stroke, blindness, heart disease and amputations. This is why it is so important to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes among people from Black African, African Caribbean and South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi) communities.

The Diabetes Community Champions spread the word about diabetes in their local communities by organising stands, talks and healthy living days. They explain what Type 2 diabetes is, who is at risk, signs and symptoms, myths and misconceptions, complications and the NHS services that are available.
