Scotland's favourite fruit and vegetable revealed

The results of a new survey released forDiabetes Weekhas found that strawberries are Scotland’s favourite fruit with 20 per cent of the public vote. The accolade of favourite vegetable goes to broccoli (18 per cent).

Although strawberry topped the bill for the nation, in Aberdeen it failed to make the top five with the ‘Granite City’ feeling the most love for watermelon.

Similarly, while broccoli was the number one choice for Scotland, in Aberdeen it was pushed into joint fourth place alongside cabbage; spinach and sweetcorn jointly claimed the top spot among Aberdonians. In Edinburgh, the bell pepper edged out broccoli as the capital’s favourite vegetable.

The survey was commissioned to help promote our new ‘Food you love’campaign to encourage people to eat more healthily.  We hope to inspire people all over the UK with tasty recipes featuring the food they love, but healthier. The campaign features easy recipes and tips to encourage more people to make small changes that can make a big difference to how they manage their diabetes.

Linda McGlynn, Regional Engagement Manager at Diabetes Scotland, said:

“It is fascinating to see the variation in Scotland’s fruit and veg taste. Personally I’m a big fan of raspberries but I do love a strawberry too.

“Eating fruit and veg is a great way of getting vital vitamins and fibre and a much healthier snack option than reaching for crisps, cereal bars or even smoothies. They are also low in calories and super filling.”
