We’re shining a light on the different ways the South West and South Central team can support people in the local area who are affected by diabetes.

We spoke to people from the diabetes community about diabetes and mental health, looking closely at the issue of anxiety. Read on to find out how diabetes has impacted them and what helped.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly rose from 33,730 in 2021 to 35,523 in 2022.

An award-winning garden designer from Wiltshire has helped create the first ever show garden in support of Diabetes UK.

Katherine Hathaway, who runs Larkhall Studios garden design practice in Chippenham, was inspired to create The Habit of Living Garden for the 2019 RHS Malvern Spring Festival, after supporting her father, who had type 2 diabetes.

Our new figures show that the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the south west has gone up from 299,299 to 306,267 since last year.

The highest prevalence of diabetes in the south west was in Swindon, where 7.59% were living with the condition, while the lowest was in Bath and North East Somerset, where 5 per cent of the population were diagnosed. The UK average was 6.8%.

We recently mounted a campaign in Dorset to call for an end to the postcode lottery affecting Flash Glucose Monitoring.

It played a key role in a nationwide Diabetes UK initiative pressing for this painless alternative to finger-prick testing to be made available on prescription across all areas of the country.

A woman from Coleford in Gloucestershire ran the Cardiff Half Marathon this October in aid of Diabetes UK.

Becca Purvis, 24, took up the challenge of running the Cardiff Half Marathon in October after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes just months earlier in January.

In the end, Becca raised £1,203, smashing the target of £1,000 she set herself.

Former England defender and Diabetes UK supporter Gary Mabbutt MBE received an honorary degree from the University of Bath this summer.

The honorary Doctor of Health degree was awarded in recognition of Gary's distinguished footballing career and tireless campaigning to raise awareness of diabetes.
