Pat says “on your bike” to diabetes

A man from Cornwall embarked on a fundraising cycle ride after taking himself out of the danger zone for Type 2 diabetes.

Pat Scully, 58, from near Camborne completed a 75-mile route in Cornwall in six hours and raised £500 for Diabetes UK. To make sure he didn’t go unnoticed, he painted himself blue and orange.

The local businessman, who runs slate signage company Stevens Cornish Slate, had lost four stone in a year after attending a course run by Cornwall Healthy Weight.

By learning how to eat more healthily and become more active, he went from a diagnosis of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (also known as pre-diabetes) to having blood glucose levels well within the normal non-diabetic range.

Wanting to share the secret of his success with others, Pat Scully decided on a high-profile sponsored cycle ride. He was interviewed by BBC Radio Cornwall on the day.

Pat Scully said: “I love my grub – I’m the kind of person who will have two steaks instead of one. I knew I was overweight but I didn’t know how to go about tackling it until I went on the course. Education is so important. Now I am down to 10 stone 4 pounds, I weigh myself every day, keep a food diary and have an app to check what I’m eating. I also cycle, go to the gym and go for long walks with my partner, Anne.

"I want people to know that it’s possible to make lasting changes and avoid a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.”
