Penny Philipps, 35, from Cardigan is taking on Swim22, to challenge herself and raise awareness in support of a close friend who has Type 1 diabetes.

Swim22 challengers swim a total of 22 miles, the equivalent of the English Channel, any time between 22 February and 22 May.

Penny is setting herself the extra challenge of completing the whole distance in just one week!

The perfect challenge

Penny, who is mum to Daisy-Belle, 5, and River, 2, started swimming last year as a way to get fit after giving up smoking.

Penny said, “I needed to do something to increase my fitness level. I started swimming and really enjoyed it, so decided to set myself a challenge. Swim22 is the perfect challenge for me as a very close friend has Type 1 diabetes and I know how difficult it can be to manage the condition day-to-day."

"I am a working mum, so it can be hard to find the time, but knowing that I'm supporting people with diabetes motivates me. It will be a big challenge to complete the 22 miles in a week but I know I can do it!"

Get fit at your own pace

We're delighted that Penny is making a splash to support the thousands of people in Wales, like her friend, who have Type 1 diabetes. We wish her the best of luck for tackling the 22 miles in just one week!

Swim22 is perfect if, like Penny, you want to challenge yourself to get fitter at your own pace and in your own time.

You can tackle the distance in your local pool or, better still, get your family, friends and colleagues involved. You can even split the 22 miles between a team.

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned swimmer, our team will be on hand to offer swimming tips and fundraising advice.

Go to Penny's JustGiving page to find out more about the challenge and show your support.
