Claire O’Brien from Cardiff is taking part in Swim 22 – and is encouraging others with Type 2 diabetes to rise to the challenge.
Claire, 45, was shocked to be diagnosed with the condition in September 2017.
A family history
Claire said, “I had been feeling run down and drinking an awful lot but I just didn’t think it would be diabetes. I felt scared and totally unprepared. I have since found out that a lot of women in my family have or have had the condition, including my aunty, my nan and her sister."
A number of factors can make you more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, including a family history of the condition.
Claire continued, “I found the change in lifestyle hard to adjust to. I didn’t know what I should eat and cut almost everything from my diet except fruit and vegetables! I learnt a lot from my GP and Diabetes UK and now I eat a varied diet.”
Determined to reach her goal
Claire continued, “I exercise every day but needed something to push me to get fitter. I thought Swim 22 would be a great challenge as well as give something back to Diabetes UK. I want to show people that I can do it and that diabetes shouldn’t stop you from reaching your goals.
Rise to the challenge
Claire had advice for others with, or at risk of, Type 2 diabetes.
Claire said, “My advice with others with Type 2 diabetes is to look after yourself, eat right and exercise. If you are worried, get tested. Don’t see it as a failure, see it as a challenge and rise to it!”
