Meet Miranda, the winner of our Supporting Diabetes UK Inspire Award

An Ystradgynlais woman has been honoured for her volunteer work with Diabetes UK Cymru by winning a national award.

Miranda Burdett, 23, who has Type 1 diabetes, was presented with the Inspire award for Supporting Diabetes UK Cymru at a ceremony in Nantgarw, near Cardiff on 4 March. The award aims to recognise someone whose tireless work and effort has supported the charity’s projects in Wales.

After completing a masters in marketing, Miranda used her skills to support the work of Diabetes UK Cymru. In particular she helped them develop a brand new campaign targeting GPs to raise awareness of the importance of spotting the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes as early as possible. The condition’s symptoms include losing weight, tiredness, as well as increased urination and thirst. Since her volunteering at Diabetes UK Cymru Miranda has decided to stay in the charity sector and is now working for another health charity.

"It is my fourth anniversary of living with diabetes"

Miranda said: “I am thrilled to have won this Inspire award and it was great to catch up with the team at Diabetes UK Cymru at the award ceremony. I had a great time volunteering at the charity’s office and I want to carry on making a difference to people with Type 1 diabetes’ lives.

“It is actually my fourth anniversary of living with diabetes so it is especially exciting to have been honoured with this award.”

The charity’s volunteers help raise awareness of how to manage the condition, campaign to improve the quality of care available, fundraise for pioneering research and work to stem the rising tide of diabetes.

"Miranda became a real part of the team"

Diabetes UK Cymru’s Director Dai Williams said: “Miranda became a real part of the team while she volunteered with us and her knowledge and skills were a huge benefit to our work. The work that she did, particularly to help shape our upcoming campaign to raise awareness of Type 1 symptoms, will have a real impact on people living across Wales.

“Through our Inspire Awards we thank our hard working volunteers like Miranda for their contributions and highlight the positive difference their work has made to the lives of people who are living with diabetes.

“Our volunteers are out there working hard in the community day in and day out. Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without their incredible support and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of our volunteers who make an enormous difference through their support.”
