Melanie Stephenson's Blog

My name is Melanie Stephenson, I’m 24 and have been living with Type 1 diabetes for 11 years. I was first diagnosed with the disease just after my 13th birthday and went straight onto two injections a day. Since then diabetes treatment has progressed as have my requirements in how I needed to treat the condition. As a result of which I am now an insulin pump user (it’s pink), and have been for the last year.

Diabetes is only a small part of my day to day life, I am also an international athlete – training six days a week. And I have just finished a degree in fashion design with my specialist area being sports performance wear. Within my forthcoming blogs I will be talking about what it is like to try and participate in sport with diabetes, how I have over-come the difficulties that I’ve faced so far and how I plan to over-come those in the future. There may even be some fashion tips thrown in for those of you who have difficutly concealing your pump (because sometimes you don’t want to be asked hundreds of questions about it when people see it)!

I’ll be happy to answer any questions along the way about anything mentioned and would be pleased to hear any thoughts or opinions about my blog too!

Charlotte Austin's Blog – Pumping Iron and Insulin

Since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three life changed dramatically for both me and my family. Since that day I have been injecting insulin and everything else that goes along with being diabetic. Throughout my teens I was very blasé about self-management but after too many close calls and three years of complete neglect during university it was time to step up.

In May 2013, I became part of the Diabetes UK Cymru Young Person’s Programme (YPP’s) with 11 other 18-30 year-olds. Being part of this exciting project with other young leaders has been pivotal in regaining focus and control.

After nearly 22 years of injections I was put on insulin pump. This is where we leave history and enter the present.

I like a challenge and competition so in the summer of 2013, I took up Olympic weightlifting. Being strong comes naturally to me (good genetics) but the skills required for Olympic weightlifting are very complex. The challenge continues.

I am a Type 1 Diabetic pumper. I was diagnosed aged 3 in 1981. I am the only diabetic in my family. I have one daughter. Diabetic retinopathy developed through my pregnancy and through this complication I lost my peripheral vision and had to give up driving.
