Guide to using video for diabetes education

8 May 2015

Healthcare professionals who want to use video as a way of engaging patients to better self manage diabetes can use a new guide from Diabetes UK to help them direct patients to online video resources.

The guide - Video As A Resource In Diabetes Education (PDF,899KB) includes information about:

  • different types of diabetes video available
  • flexibility of video education
  • engaging people with diabetes
  • self management
  • behaviour change
  • recent innovations.

Getting the right information to patients with diabetes is crucial in raising awareness of the condition and to support them with self management. People learn through a range of different methods and video education is another resource healthcare professionals can use as well as traditional structured courses like DESMOND, DAFNE, and X-PERT.

"When a patient “reads” information from a pamphlet they read it in their own voice – a voice that might be feeling depressed or disheartened about the possibility of managing their disease.  When a patient “hears” the same information delivered by an expert clinician or expert patient they are more likely to overcome their negative perception of their own health situation.

There are numerous videos about diabetes available online, varying in standard and approach. Recently a series of online videos have been developed, in which healthcare professionals offer their advice and people with diabetes talk about their experiences of managing diabetes.
