I'm their biggest supporter

These children are an inspiration and a credit to their families, says a classroom assistant.

I am a classroom assistant at a school. I currently support three diabetic children in school. I support a 5-year-old boy who was diagnosed in August last year and currently on insulin injections. He receives great support from his P1 teacher too. I also support a 9-year old girl who started on injections, but received a pump during her first year with us.

I accompany her on school day trips, again I have fabulous backup from another of the teachers. I have supported an 11-year-old boy since he started school at the age of 5. He came to school receiving insulin injections which I was trained to administer (not easy when you are a bit needle phobic!)

He received an insulin pump at the age of 8, which I still oversee. I have accompanied him on school day trips from primary 1 and as a keen footballer he was selected for the school team and for the past two years I have been his biggest supporter on the sidelines. This year being his last year in primary school brought the residential trip - four days in Edinburgh again I accompanied him.

I will be sorry to see him leave at the end of the year and have had massive support from his family right through his time at school. These children are an inspiration living with diabetes and a credit to their families. Thank you for the opportunity to tell you about these fantastic children.
