She was proof positive that diabetes is something you can live with quite happily

Emma's story

My Aunty Mary was type 1 diabetic for many years, before I was born. She recently passed away aged 83 after having lived a wonderful fun filled life and her children requested that we donated to yourselves in her memory.I have many fond memories of her, with her pig insulin in the fridge and enormous glass syringes and needles that were frighteningly huge. The needles had to be used again and again. They would be almost blunt before she wwould go and get a new one.Her husband worked in an engineering company and he designed her a contraption to sit the syringe in, it was spring loaded and she would fire the needle into her leg!!It worked a treat! She took it everywhere - even on their holidays abroad. When the airport security man stopped her to enquire what this strange thing on the xray machine was, she cheerfully proclaimed ". Oh that's just my gun!" She wasn't at all concerned about the havoc she caused either. We will all miss her terribly......she was proof positive that diabetes is something you can live with quite happily.Emma
