Joe climbed Up at The O2 to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November. Joe took on the climb to raise awareness of diabetes and what it means to live with the condition, as his daughter has Type 1 diabetes. Joe has also raised more than £1,000 for Diabetes UK and climbed with 10 members of Diabetes UK staff.
Joe said: “Climbing The O2 for Diabetes UK was great fun and it’s also good to be able to raise money to support a very worthy cause. I also hope to get across the serious message about what living with diabetes is like. My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 11 years old, and it’s had a big impact on our family life over the years. I’m amazed at how far the technology has come as well, as my daughter is now on an insulin pump.
“People think diabetes is diabetes, but unless you’ve got it you don’t know there are two main types and you’re not aware of the differences. Type 1 is unavoidable, and is nothing to do with lifestyle whereas Type 2 is often related to being overweight. I really want to raise awareness of both types, and think everyone should be aware of the differences.”
