Novo Nordisk has announced that Actrapid U500 insulin, used by a small number of patients in the UK, will be discontinued from January 2008.
The company says that as the insulin is only used by 315 people world-wide, including 250 patients in the UK, it is not viable to continue production.
The insulin is prescribed on a named patient only basis in the UK. It is usually given to very insulin resistant patients who are taking very large doses of insulin.
All relevant healthcare professionals (HCP) have been contacted, but if you are currently using Actrapid U500 and have any questions please contact the HCP that prescribed it for you.
