Insulin pill to replace injections?

A British research company is today presenting results of its insulin pill research at the American Diabetes Association conference.

Findings come from a small trial of 16 people with Type 2 diabetes.

Dr Iain Frame, Research Manager at Diabetes UK said:

“This research into oral insulin treatment is interesting. We welcome any advance which could improve the lives of people with diabetes in the future. There are currently 700,000 people in the UK who take insulin injections, sometimes up to four times a day, so being able to take their insulin orally would have a great impact on their quality of life.

"This research, however, is still in its early stages and we would like to see further results. Also, the research indicates that a large dose of insulin is needed in order to lower blood glucose levels. We would welcome further studies establishing its suitability for use in all insulin users."
