London Mayor Boris Johnson has pledged his support for World Diabetes Day, which took place on Friday 14 November.
In a letter to Sir Michael Hirst, Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and of Diabetes UK, Mr Johnson outlined the importance of helping young people in the capital and backed IDF’s proclamations supporting World Diabetes Day.
Mr Johnson said: “I was very pleased to read in your letter that the theme of this year's World Diabetes Day is 'Diabetes in children and adolescents'. It is alarming to learn that in the UK 21,000 young people under the age of 15 have diabetes.
“I hope that World Diabetes Day was a great success and that the set of proclamations being published on your website serve to raise awareness about the significant burden that diabetes places on our society.”
