Diabetes UK supporter Lisa Bond, who has had Type 1 diabetes since she was six-years-old, is holding a charity fashion show to raise funds for Diabetes UK.
The show takes place in the Corn Exchange, High East Street, Dorchester, Devon, on Thursday 10 April at 7pm.
Why Lisa wants to help
Lisa, 24, lost the sight in her right eye after she developed diabetic retinopathy at 21. During her teens Lisa rebelled against her diabetes and started skipping vital insulin injections to lose weight, a practice now known as ‘diabulimia’. Her diabetes became very poorly controlled, which greatly increased her chances of developing the serious complications of the condition such as blindness, heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.
"Diabetes UK helped me"
“These days I am back on track and do everything I can to manage my diabetes properly,” said Lisa. “I desperately want to make sure that other young girls don’t make the same mistakes I did, so I’m holding the fashion show to raise awareness of diabetes and funds for Diabetes UK, which has helped me through some rough times.
I love fashion and this seemed like the perfect event for me to do. I’ve not bought any clothes for a year to raise money for Diabetes UK, so this is a fitting way to round off a tough 12 months!”
Jan Tyrrell, Regional Manager of Diabetes UK South West, added: “Diabetes UK would like to say a huge 'thank you' to Lisa for all her fundraising efforts over the past year.
"It is fantastic that, despite the complications of her diabetes, Lisa has taken control of her condition and now wants to warn other young people of the dangers of poor diabetes management.”
The show is being held in conjunction with Travelling Trends, who provide the outfits for the models to wear on the night. After the catwalk show they will be selling some of this season’s hottest clothes from a variety of high street stores at a reduced price. So come along and snap up a bargain - it’s all for a good cause!
Tickets are available now for just £5 from various shops in Dorchester including Specsavers, Starbucks, Orchid clothing store and Medusa hair and beauty salon.
