Diabetes UK launches Peer Support service

Find out other ways of talking to someone with diabetes.

Diabetes UK are delighted to announce the launch of a new support scheme for people living with diabetes. The scheme connects those in need with people who know first-hand that dealing with diabetes can be tough, and who can offer an understanding ear.

Peer Support offers a telephone and internet service run by volunteers who are living with diabetes, providing empathetic and heart-felt support, no matter where you live or what services are offered locally. The service is confidential, safe and secure, and the volunteers are specially trained.

A chance to talk to someone who understands

This is a chance to talk to someone who understands how worried you might feel about your first retinopathy tests. Someone who knows what it’s like to be a parent, juggling school, insulin and carb-counting as well as everything else that family life brings. A person who understands why you are feeling concerned about your next HbA1c result after struggling with a strict new diet. Sometimes everyone needs to talk things over, and support can make the difference between a good day, and a really tough one.

David B

The service has a range of volunteers with a wealth of experience. David B, for example, is happy to talk about developing complications, DAFNE, travelling overseas and dealing with diabetes in a relationship. David said, "I have had Type 1 for 50 years and have plenty of experience in dealing with diabetes and its moods.

"I'm also involved in various diabetes-related voluntary activities and committees, so am confident in talking to people and passing on any advice that I've picked up along the way."

Sybil

Sybil was diagnosed three years ago, and understands how difficult it can be to come to terms with a diagnosis. She said, "Diagnosis was an emotional experience which left me upset, anxious and uncertain about the future. Actively seeking information and making contact with someone else who had diabetes helped me to come to terms with it. Having lived through that period, I am happy to share my experience and offer support to others."

Sybil is also experienced in many other areas of life with diabetes including work, driving and a Caribbean diet.
