Swim22 participants go to great lengths for Diabetes UK

A huge thank you to everyone who took part inSwim22, Diabetes UK’s first ever Channel Swim Pool Challenge. There were over 430 participants, either going the distance alone or swimming as part of a team to cover 22 miles in their local pools.

Swimmers of all ages took part between 22 August and 22 November, and swam 1,416 lengths (of a 25m pool) either on their own, or as part of a team friends, colleagues or classmates.

A great success

Swim22 has been a great success, and we're really pleased that the challenge has so far has raised a fantastic £32,000, with funds still coming in.

Improving health

Gary, who took part in Swim22, said:

Today I didn't fancy going swimming, but only went because of this event. I had a lovely swim. I've lost weight because of the exercise and feel fitter and my swimming stroke has improved.

I don't inject so much insulin at night because my body is more responsive to the insulin due to the exercise, so hopefully less insulin injected will continue to help me to lose weight.

I wear the swim hat when I go swimming, and my friends and family are sponsoring me, even though times are financially tough. The point is that this event is helping me, someone with diabetes, improve my health, and that's what our charity is partly about.

Register your interest

The next Swim22 challenge will take place between 22 April and 22 July 2012. We would love to make the event even bigger and better next year, so if you would like to take part please register your interest. Swim22 is a brilliant challenge and one in which anyone can take part, so why not join the team?

Here are a few photos of our Swim22 participants in 2011. A big thank you once again to everyone involved.
