A Harpenden-based local club has donated more than £4,600 to Diabetes UK after organising a gift fair.

The Harpenden Circle gift fair, held at the end of last year, has been running for over 40 years and the most recent event raised cash for Diabetes UK as the group’s vice chair Vickie Ryland lives withType 1 diabetes.

Vickie said: “I put Diabetes UK forward as one of the charities to support as I have lived with Type 1 diabetes since I was seven years old.

“I had been very unwell for a few weeks before I was diagnosed and admitted into St Albans Hospital in a coma. My parents and I learnt how to inject insulin and we also had to adjust to counting carbohydrates in food.

“Since my diagnosis I have always been very careful with my food and take good care of myself. I have been on educational courses to learn how to manage my condition. I have a busy life and commute to London, so have learnt how to juggle and balance it 24 hours a day."

It is hard condition to live with, you never get a day off, which is why I wanted to support the work of Diabetes UK.

The event included cakes and snacks, a tombola with an array of gorgeous gifts, children’s entertainment and a display of local arts and crafts. This year’s event will be on November 24 and 25.

Teresa Strange, Diabetes UK Eastern fundraiser, said: “We are so grateful to the Harpenden Circle for their amazingfundraisingefforts. This donation will be used to invest in vital research into diabetes and also help support and educate people living with the condition as well as working hard to help more people reduce their risk of developingType 2 diabetes.”
