Harwich friends tackle physical challenges to raise money for Diabetes UK

A Wivenhoe-based estate agent and his friend have signed up to complete four physical feats after seeing the daily impact diabetes can have on people living with condition.

Jamie Lynch, 41, (pictured left) and Trevor Lewis, 34, who both live in Dovercourt, decided to embark on the challenge and raise money for Diabetes UK.

“We were both shocked to see the impact the condition has. I work with a man who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes nine years ago,” said Jamie.

“Trev's goddaughter, who is five years old was diagnosed withType 1 diabetesa year ago, she has to inject insulin four times a day and this is why we chose to do four events.

“Raising awareness and understanding of the condition is very important to us. Hopefully the money we raise will help improve care and ultimately find a cure.”

Trev and I were both shocked at the impact Type 1 diabetes has on people's lives and wanted to do something to help and challenge ourselves at the same time.

Jamie and Trev have already embarked on their first challenge. They completed the Colchester Half Marathon on March 12.

Their next challenge is the Tour de Tendring on May 14 – a 60mile bike ride, this is followed by the Harwich Sprint triathlon in June – a 300 metre swim, a 24 kilometre bike ride and a 5 kilometre run and the amazing challenge will end with a six hour five-a-side charity football match on July 8 and in the evening a charity disco and raffle will be held.

Trev added: “We’ve had lots of support locally and really appreciate it. We just want to keep injury free and complete it all to the best of our ability.”

Teresa Strange, Diabetes UK Eastern fundraiser, said: “Jamie and Trevor’s challenge is inspiring and we really are grateful to them for the funds they are raising to support our work.

“Diabetes is serious, people living with it never get a day off and can face serious complications if they do not manage their condition well.

“We support people living diabetes, work hard to improve care, invest inresearchto ultimately find a cure and work with the NHSand others to try and stem the catastrophic rise inType 2diabetes.”
