Dr Jason Cheung (pictured), clinical lead for the inpatient diabetes service at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was chosen for his passion, and commitment to excellence in diabetes care.

A consultant in diabetes and endocrinology from Norfolk has been selected as a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, to help transform care for people living with diabetes in the East of England.

The schools were chosen for the Diabetes UK ‘Good Diabetes Care in School Award 2020’ because of the support they provide to students with the condition, the help offered to manage their diabetes safely, and the care they take to include them in all school activities. 

Five East of England schools have won an award for providing great care to children and young people with type 1 diabetes.

The collaborative initiative between Diabetes UK, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) will see key information given with prescriptions to people living with diabetes.

A six-week targeted campaign to empower people across the county living with diabetes to take control of their condition is launching this week.

84-year-old Colin Bedford (pictured) will cycle five miles a day for five days. Each time he will complete the challenge on a different one of his own historic bikes, while wearing costumes matching the bike’s era.

A March vintage cycling enthusiast is embarking on a sponsored bike ride with a difference for Diabetes UK in September.

Increase in number of people diagnosed

We are releasing today new analysis that shows that the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the East of England has increased from 338,118 to 352,356 since last year. 

In the UK 3.9 million people are currently living with a diagnosis of diabetes, and 90% of those with type 2 diabetes

People with type 2 diabetes are 50% more likely to die prematurely. We are urgently calling on Government to tackle obesity.

People will learn how to maintain a healthy diet, become more confident in managing their diabetes day-to-day and find out what services are available locally. There will also be an opportunity to ask diabetes experts questions and get practical up-to-date information.

Diabetes UK and NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are hosting a free event for people living with type 2 diabetes in Ipswich on Monday 15 July.
