Sam Goff, 44, is running to support people with diabetes in the hope that she can help others avoid the complications her dad experienced.

Sam, a supervisor at the Menu Shop in Colne said: “I always promised my dad that I would run for Diabetes UK in order to support others with the condition, so this year I want to run to help the charity’s work and to remember my dad.”

Sam’s dad Richard passed away on 13th February this year, aged 71 after complications from his diabetes led to heart failure. He had lived with Type 2 diabetes for over 15 years.

“My dad always found it difficult to manage his blood glucose levels and to control his diabetes. It is so important that people receive the education, help and support they need in order to manage their condition.”

Sam was told she was at risk of Type 2 diabetes herself, but manage to reduce her risk by making changes to her lifestyle, with help from Pendle Leisure Centre.

She’ll be completing the course with her husband Mark who is also taking part. The run, set for 28 May 2017, sees dozens of #TeamDUK runners take to the streets to run the half marathon course.

Starting and finishing in the city centre, the race passes Old Trafford, the Imperial War Museum North and the Coronation Street set with more than 40,000 people taking part every year.

Lara Dobson, Diabetes UK Fundraising Manager, said: “The Great Manchester Run is one of Europe’s leading races, whether you are an elite runner or a novice. We’re really grateful to Sam for joining #TeamDUK to help raise vital funds to help people living with diabetes.

“Every penny raised will help us to support the millions of people living with diabetes in the UK so please give generously to back Sam and support her amazing effort.”

If you have a place in the Great Manchester Run but haven’t selected a charity yet, we would love you to run for Diabetes UK. For more information, email events.fundraising@diabetes.org.uk
