The commitment from the NHS Leeds Clinical Commissioning Groups Partnership comes as it has recently received £116,000 to improve access to diabetes courses for people with Type 2 diabetes.

The funding is part of a £44 million investment by NHS England, which has worked with Diabetes UK to identify four top priorities to raise standards of treatment and care for people with diabetes.

The aim is that by 2023, over half of people with diabetes will attend an education course within one year of diagnosis. The CCGs are also pledging to offer more people, who are already living with diabetes, the opportunity to attend an education programme.

Educational courses for people with Type 2 diabetes in Leeds include a self-management skills training programme aimed at providing them with the knowledge and ability to self-manage their diabetes successfully. People with Type 1 diabetes in Leeds can also access the DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) course. This is typically a five day course running from 9am-5pm.

Dr Bryan Power, Clinical Lead for Cardiovascular Disease for the NHS Leeds CCG Partnership, said: “As a GP I see first-hand the impact diabetes can have on an individual’s life. I am convinced, and evidence backs this up, that people who have greater control over their condition reduce their risk of developing other linked health complications. The education courses available in Leeds are designed to help you manage your condition and I would strongly recommend them to anyone who has been diagnosed with diabetes or has had the condition for a number of years. It is never too late to take control.”
