The Stockport Tadpoles Diabetes Group marked their 25th anniversary in October, celebrating 25 years of supporting families and young people affected by Type 1 diabetes.

The group, who meet once a month at the Edgeley Play Centre, were formed in 1994 to support families with children who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The group, part of Diabetes UK, had only just formed when Deborah Spires, her husband Paul and their son Ashley joined shortly after Ashley had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 2.

Deborah, who is chair of the Stockport Tadpoles, said: “It is a marvellous achievement for the group to be celebrating its 25th birthday. Over the years, the Stockport Tadpoles have helped support many families in Stockport and Greater Manchester. We want families affected by diabetes to feel that they are not dealing with it on their own, something my own family realised when we joined 25 years ago.

“We’d like to thank Diabetes UK for their support, as well as everyone involved with the group for their ongoing support, without which we wouldn’t be able to run the many events for children and families throughout the year.”

Type 1 diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where blood glucose levels are too high because the body can't make a hormone called insulin. No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable. It is treated by daily insulin doses – taken either by injections or via an insulin pump.

As well as offering support and information for young people and families affected by Type 1 diabetes, the group have also campaigned to raise awareness of diabetes and the issues that affect those living with the condition.

Clare Howarth, Head of the North of England at Diabetes UK said: “It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate this incredible landmark with the Stockport Tadpoles group.

“A huge thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication to helping run the group and provide vital support for young people and families affected by Type 1 diabetes. Congratulations on 25 years of amazing work.”
