Why are these figures important?

Why are these figures important? Why are these figures important? For people with diabetes there are major health benefits from losing weight. These include better control of blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of long term complications.  Being overweight makes diabetes control more difficult as excess weight makes it hard for the body to use insulin properly irrespective of whether the insulin is being injected or made by the body.

As a measure of blood glucose the HbA1c measurement can be treated as an indicator of good diabetes management.  Having average blood glucose levels under 7.5% (58mmol/mol) will lead to better health and fewer complications in the future.

Retinopathy where blood vessels in the eye can become blocked is a progressive condition that develops over time. Annual screening for retinopathy is essential and early detection is the key to successful treatment.
