Over 300,000 Scots living with type 2 diabetes, including those yet to be diagnosed. People with type 2 diabetes 50% more likely to die prematurely.

New analysis released today by Diabetes Scotland shows that the number of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in Scotland has increased by 40%, from 190,772 to 267,615, between 2008 and 2018.

In addition there are an estimated 34,830 people living with type 2 diabetes who are yet to be diagnosed, bringing the total number up to 302,455.

This new year, Diabetes Scotland is calling for solutions to the gaps in mental health care for people living with diabetes with the publication of a new guide highlighting

The guide, ‘Emotional wellbeing and diabetes: A way forward’, details areas where mental health care is delivered successfully to people with diabetes.

Diabetes Scotland is today (Thursday) calling for better support around the emotional and mental health impacts of the condition – as the world marks World Diabetes Day.

Supporters from across Scotland are travelling to the Scottish Parliament to meet Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport, Jeane Freeman MSP, and share their experiences of how the relentless demands of the condition can adversely affect emotional and mental health.

A Type 1 diabetes diagnosis can be challenging for the whole family. That’s why having a support network who understand what you’re going through is a lifeline.

There are nine active Diabetes Scotland family groups. One of the newest groups to join is Forth Valley T1 Families. Launched in spring this year, the group has already hosted nine events from arts and crafts to trampolining. They have also organised meet ups for parents only and a teen event where they enjoyed a Segway Tour.

A group of Diabetes Scotland supporters were invited to visit research labs at University of Edinburgh recently to find out more about Diabetes UK-funded research.

Among the group were some of the charity’s most passionate and dedicated fundraisers. Without this support, we would not be able to fund the ground-breaking research leading us towards better prevention and treatment of diabetes and, eventually, a cure.

The Diabetes Scotland team is heading to towns across Scotland to host more Diabetes in Scotland – Making Change Happen events.

The roadshow events provide an opportunity for the diabetes community to come together and make a positive difference. We will discuss the issues that really matter to people living with diabetes and work together to find solutions to problems.

A Diabetes UK supporter is travelling from Ohio, USA, to take part in the Great Glen Challenge 2019, paddleboarding from Fort William to Inverness, to raise money for the charity.

Adrian Angell has already crossed the English Channel on a paddleboard raising over £2000 for Diabetes UK. He hopes to raise a further £1000 through this challenge.

Families of children living with Type 1 diabetes are invited to join us at our third annual Family Network Day at Glasgow Science Centre on Saturday 21 September 2019.

This is a free event for families to get together, share information and experiences, and participate in discussions on issues affecting them. Most importantly, this is a day to have fun!  Everyone who attends the event will also have free admittance to the Science Centre to check out all the awesome and interactive exhibits.

Alistair Smith, Glasgow City FC Under 19s National Performance Coach, decided to personally sponsor the team's away kits with the Diabetes UK logo to ensure he gets the message out across the country that having “diabetes should never stop you doing what you love”.
