Guildford Golf Club have scored a major success by raising over £5,000 for Diabetes UK – its nominated charity for 2016.

Guildford Golf Club’s Captain, Mike Robson, presented Diabetes UK CEO, Chris Askew, with a cheque at a special club event on Monday 6 February.

Every year the Men's and Ladies Captain lead the club’s fundraising efforts by selecting a chosen charity.  Mike Robson, Men’s Captain, has lived with Type 1 diabetes for 30 years and nominated Diabetes UK.  Sandra Read, the Ladies Captain, also chose the charity after she lost a close friend to diabetes.

The club captains fundraising included a series of quizzes, a New Year’s Eve raffle, golf days and auctions over the course of the year.  Mike Robson said: “We have 650 members and I want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us so generously this year. I’m very proud of them for digging so deep. A year of fundraising has raised £5,498 for this particular charity which does so much to help people living with diabetes. It’s a wonderful achievement.”

Surrey-based Chris Askew said: “Wow! Guildford’s golfers have clubbed together to raise an amazing total. Thank you from everyone at Diabetes UK. We are the largest charitable funder of diabetes research in the UK and the money raised will go towards our pioneering research that helps improve and save lives.”
