A 13-year-old diabetes fundraiser from Swindon has won a British Citizen Youth Award.
Phoebe Maddison travelled to London to receive her medal from TV presenter and leader of dance troupe Diversity, Ashley Banjo, pictured above.
The British Citizen Youth Award recognises inspirational young people for their selfless acts of kindness and their positive impact on society.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of four, Phoebe has made it her mission to raise awareness of the condition among children and adults alike. She made a short film for the BBC at the age of seven which aimed to help children and schools understand the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Entitled The Same but Different, the film won an International Children’s Emmy.
Phoebe has a real passion for music and is an accomplished singer. In November 2014 she released a charity single called “My Life” and, at the end of last year, Phoebe recorded another charity song called “I am the Hero”, which will be released shortly. She has also sung at the annual Pop4Diabetes ball held in Bournemouth.
She has previously won a Pride of Swindon Award and a Diabetes UK Inspire Award for her video entry "What do you really know?" for the Diabetes in School short film competition 2015, in which she won Best Individual Film.
