An 80-year-old man with Type 1 diabetes from Painswick, Gloucestershire helped Diabetes UK to a world record in the JCP Swansea Half Marathon in June

Anthony Fisher was one of a team of 60 runners with the condition to complete this year's Swansea Half Marathon, helping us into the record books for the most number of people with Type 1 diabetes to run a half marathon.

We are delighted to announce that Felix Hagan is playing live at a charity gig in aid of Diabetes UK.

The event is for all ages and is aimed at helping to raise awareness among young people. There will be plenty of information from Diabetes UK available on the night.

Felix Hagan and the Family have been injecting much-needed excitement – and glitter – into the dark heart of the rock scene since 2013.

Diabetes UK in the South West has responded today to Dorset’s Clinical Commissioning Group’s decision to make Flash, a life-changing technology, available to only 200 people with diabetes on a six-

Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK regional head in the South West, said:

“The Dorset Clinical Commissioning group should make Flash available to all people with diabetes in the area who can benefit now, and not just to a very limited group of 200 patients for six months.

Our Chief Executive Chris Askew got a warm welcome when he joined our Taunton local support group for their walk in French Weir Park on 2 May.

The group, pictured above with Chris, centre back, has recently set up a walking group to help promote exercise and healthy lifestyle, getting members out and about enjoying the parks and open spaces in their local community.

A doctor, an office volunteer and two tea ladies were among the everyday heroes honoured in our South West Inspire Awards.

Individuals and groups from all over the South West joined the celebration on 7 June at the Castle Hotel in Taunton to be recognised for their hard work volunteering for us.

Dr Alex Bickerton, a diabetes specialist at Yeovil Hospital, won the Campaigning and Raising Awareness Award for his work to improve diabetes care in Somerset.

A 13-year-old diabetes fundraiser from Swindon has won a British Citizen Youth Award.

Phoebe Maddison travelled to London to receive her medal from TV presenter and leader of dance troupe Diversity, Ashley Banjo, pictured above.

The British Citizen Youth Award recognises inspirational young people for their selfless acts of kindness and their positive impact on society.

The number of people with diabetes in the South West would fill Bristol City Football Stadium 11 times over.

According to the latest statistics, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in the South West has now reached 299,299.

An 11-year-old boy who has Type 1 diabetes had a unique chance to learn about research into his condition.

Daniel Lindley and his mum Karen from Lostwithiel in Cornwall joined our tour of the Islet Cell Biology lab at the University of Exeter Medical School.

Karen and Daniel met Professor Noel Morgan, director of the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Science at Exeter Medical School and other researchers who have been funded by us.

Two intrepid young climbers took on the daunting challenge of the Welsh 3 Peaks to raise funds. 

Rebecca Rawle, 12, and Maddy Miller, 13, nicknamed Boo and Moo, set out to take on the Welsh 3 Peaks during February to raise money for Diabetes UK children’s and families local group Supporting Kernow’s Young Diabetics, based in Truro.
