Diabetes UK Cymru is teaming up with this year’s Beat Flu campaign to urge people living with diabetes to get their flu jab this winter.
Catching the flu is more dangerous for people with long-term health conditions, such as diabetes. Flu vaccinations are the best way to protect against catching or spreading the virus.
It’s important to renew your vaccination every year, as the influenza (flu) virus changes and immunity can decrease over time. Yearly vaccinations also help to stop flu from spreading across Wales, so getting your free jab helps to keep you and those around you safe.
A serious issue
Flu is a serious issue, especially for people with long-term health conditions. It can make you seriously ill, and can even prove fatal. Evidence shows that people with diabetes are over six times more likely to die from influenza than those without the condition, so it’s important to protect yourself. However, last year over a third of people with diabetes under the age of 65 missed out on getting their free vaccination.
Don't put yourself at risk
Dai Williams, our national director, says, “The flu comes around every year, but each year thousands of people with diabetes are at risk of serious complications because they fail to protect themselves. Influenza cannot be treated with antibiotics, so make sure you get your vaccine. Don’t put yourself at risk.”
