An inspirational teenager with Type 1 diabetes and her family have been recognised for their dedicated volunteering work with an Inspire Award.

Gracie Macauley, 18, her dad, Marc, and mum, Anna, from Kinmel Bay, received the Fundraising Award at our annual awards ceremony after raising more than £13,000 last year.

Gracie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2012, aged 12. At first the family found the diagnosis difficult to come to terms with.

Mum Anna said, “Looking back, Gracie had the classic symptoms of Type 1 diabetes, which are called the 4Ts. She was thirsty, needing the toilet more often, getting thinner and tired all the time.

“We were in total shock and couldn’t believe it. We found it very hard to adjust and to get our heads around the new lifestyle this would mean for Gracie. We felt very alone in those early days! We were so pleased to find Diabetes UK Cymru and to get some support.”

Much-needed awareness

“Gracie is now doing really well and going to university in September. Now we’re dedicated to raising funds to help others get help and information. We also want to raise much-needed awareness, as many people still don’t understand what Type 1 diabetes is all about.”

Over the years the family has raised tens of thousands of pounds. Their Glitz and Glam Ball in Chester last May was attended by more than 200 guests and raised £13,000.

Anna continued, “We were humbled to receive this Inspire Award. It is very much a team effort and we are just so pleased to be making a difference to other families in our situation. We have more events and ideas in the pipeline, so watch this space!”

"Gracie has shown great courage"

Our director, Dai Williams, said, “We were delighted to present this award to Gracie, Marc and Anna for their incredible efforts and ongoing commitment to fundraising for us. Life with Type 1 can be challenging, but Gracie has shown great courage and perseverance and is now making a huge difference to the lives of other families living with the condition. Congratulations to the whole family, and thank you!”
