A diabetes specialist from Newport ran the London Marathon to raise crucial funds and awareness for us.
Podiatrist Helen Newton, 39, was inspired to run the route after seeing first-hand how devastating the condition can be.
She is already a seasoned runner who tackled the Pontypool 10k, the Cardiff 10k and the Cardiff half marathon in 2017, but the London Marathon was her biggest challenge so far.
She completed the 26.2 mile route in six hours and 25 minutes.
An amazing experience
Helen said: “The whole experience was absolutely amazing – all the training was worth it. Everything from the atmosphere to the camaraderie to seeing people running in fancy dress was so much fun.
“The support I received throughout my marathon journey from Diabetes UK Cymru was incredible, and of course my family were on hand to cheer me along the route. It was so motivating to see my mum, dad, husband and daughters looking out for me as I ran and passing me water. I loved every minute of the race.”
A fundraising future
Helen raised £4,597 thanks to her marathon effort. She also boosted her fundraising earlier this year by hosting a fundraising ball at the Rogerstone and Bassaleg Social Club. The event included an appearance from Chepstow Big Band Swingcopation, a buffet and an auction with prizes ranging from tickets to the musical Wicked to a signed Newport Gwent Dragons rugby shirt.
Helen said: “I’m so proud of myself for finishing the marathon, and to have raised so much for Diabetes UK Cymru. This is just the beginning of my fundraising journey. I will be organising a fundraising dinner dance with my hospital to raise money for diabetes care and I’ve already signed up to next year’s marathon. I will be running for Diabetes UK Cymru again, so watch this space!”
