Junior tennis captains Libby Smith, 17, and Isaac Follon, 15, organised a day of fun at Dinas Powys Tennis Club. Over 100 parents and children attended the day, which included touch tennis tournaments, a game of “Soak the Coach”, a barbecue and a raffle. .

Diabetes UK is a charity that is close to Libby’s heart, as her father Andrew was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 14 years ago. Her aunt also lives with the condition.

Teen tennis ace

Libby is in the first tennis team at the club, and was last year’s singles, doubles and mixed champion in the adult tournaments. She organised the Club’s first junior charity day two years ago and the event was such a success the Club invited her back to organise the 2017 event.

Libby said: “We never expected the day to raise as much as it did.. Everyone was ecstatic and punching the air. I am already thinking about doing a run and a tennis-a-thon in support of Diabetes UK Cymru. This is not the end of my fundraising journey.”

Community spirit

Libby’s mum, Sian Smith said: “When Libby puts her heart and soul into something she can achieve amazing things, and the junior charity event was no different. Thanks to her and Isaac, the day raised over £600.

“People were so generous and genuinely interested in the cause. There was a great community spirit throughout the day. It was lovely to see so many people come together to support something so important.”
